The small town of IJmuiden is truly immersed in the world of fresh fish. With its own fish auction, fishing fleet, and numerous fish trading companies, IJmuiden rightfully holds a prominent position among the leading fishing ports throughout Europe.
The history of the fishing industry in IJmuiden dates back over a century to the opening of the North Sea Canal. Thanks to decades of experience, IJmuiden’s fish companies have mastered the art of producing an authentic and high-quality regional product like no other. Virtually every aspect, from catching to processing, can be found in the port. When it comes to fish, IJmuiden has an intriguing tale to tell, with a genuine regional product, the finest and freshest “North Sea fish,” taking center stage.
Regrettably, the story of the best North Sea fish from IJmuiden remains relatively unknown to the general public. Several fishing companies have come together under the “Noordzeevis uit IJmuiden” Foundation with the goal of introducing a much wider audience to IJmuiden, allowing them to experience and, most importantly, savor the finest fish!
One of the latest attractions in IJmuiden, completed in the last quarter of 2020, is the “Viskade” or “Fish Quay” This beautifully landscaped square is within walking distance of both the Felison Terminal (13 minutes) and the Felison Cruise Terminal (30 minutes). The quay offers a splendid view of the perpetually bustling fishing port, while the adjacent restaurants and cafeterias provide a diverse selection of the ocean’s finest offerings. You can enjoy a delectable lunch or a fantastic dinner at one of the restaurants, or follow the local tradition by ordering something and dining outside by the waterfront. Here’s an insider tip: make sure to try IJmuiden’s specialty, “kibbeling” (see below).
However, do be mindful of the ever-present and mischievous seagulls, as they will certainly try to snatch something from you as soon as they spot something edible!
